We’re nearing the end of 2024, and it’s been an incredibly busy year! I’ve given 18 talks in nine different countries (Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Malaysia, Spain, Switzerland, the UK and the US); appeared in two National Geographic documentaries, and the new Don’t Die documentary about Bryan Johnson; spoken on BBC Radio 4’s Sliced Bread, and a big new podcast which isn’t out so I can’t share details just yet!; and, between all that, I’ve not had time to write much, but I did squeeze in an article for WIRED, and three cover stories for BBC Science Focus.
Here’s to more longevity science awareness-raising and campaigning in 2025!
And here’s a slightly more detailed round-up if you’re interested:
The year started with my first ever trip to Davos for the World Economic Forum. I spoke at the Longevity Investors Lunch, attended a few WEF satellite events, and made a video about equality of access to future longevity treatments—aka, whether the Davos-attending gajillionaires and global elite will live forever. Watch it here:
I had a lot of fun at home in Berlin, from being papped at the Cinema for Peace Gala in Berlin with my wife Tran, and then Bob Geldof, to launching Berlin’s first ever Longevity Week:
But I also did a lot of travelling—most ridiculously in June, which was my mini world tour: I spoke to the Malaysian government and pension fund in Kuala Lumpur, then at an investing event in Venice the next day (thanks, time zones!), Cheltenham Science Festival two days later, and the new Founders Forum Longevity in London and Longevity Summit Dublin the following week.
I then closed out the month in Munich, as part of a bilingual scientist-and-doctor husband-and-wife double-bill at Festival der Zukunft (Festival of the Future), with Tran giving her first ever German-language introduction to the science of ageing.
In September, I was on the 100th episode of BBC Radio 4’s Sliced Bread, putting claims about longevity supplements under the microscope, and another massive podcast that isn’t out yet but I’ll be super-excited to share with you in 2025.
I visited the US twice, once in spring for the Livelong Summit in Florida, and then in autumn for the Longever. Healthier. Better. Summit in Boston. It was really exciting to see how health and longevity has such a thriving community stateside—we just need to direct some of that enthusiasm towards science funding and policy action.
Here’s the obligatory conference badge round-up:
And the more unusual magazine cover round-up!
All this left me with not enough time for exercise and just relaxing, so let’s hope 2025 has a bit more of that in store…
Merry Christmas (or whatever you do or don’t celebrate at this time of year), Happy New Year, and see you in 2025 for more longevity science advocacy!
Happy new year! Good luck with 2025!
(Also, is there a way to subscribe to your blog? Sorry if it’s obvious and I’ve missed it)
Thank you! Same to you. 🙂
And yes, there is, but it’s hidden in the source code… There are ATOM and RSS feeds that you can subscribe to in a feed reader. Given that feed readers are basically dead and email newsletters are all the rage these days I have been meaning to spin one up…perhaps something for this year!
