Mobile phone microscope

For ludicrous macro performance, just add water

It’s been a while, since we’ve had a new Lab, Camera, Action! video, but the waiting is finally over! Ever wondered how to turn your phone into a microscope? Wonder no more! All you need is a drop of water… Watch the video to find out how.

This was a genuine serendipitous train of thought, from speckled phone screen on a drizzly day to astonishingly high-powered macro photo device once I’d joined the brightly-coloured dots. It really does work ridiculously well considering that the lens literally came out of the tap.

Here are a few sample photos taken with the set-up:

That’s a rather dreamy shot of some blossom, the halftone pattern of a photograph in a book, a British penny, and a close-up of a leaf. Pretty impressive for a three-year-old phone and some water!

We just have to finish with what I hope is an obvious disclaimer: phones and other electronic devices can be damaged by contact with water. If you try this out at home, you do so at your own risk.

Thanks for watching, and any liking or sharing would be much appreciated!
